To enter the GSGES as a regular student, you need to pass either of the following entrance examinations (cf. Entrance Examinations). For details, refer to the gudelines of the examinations.

To enter the GSGES as a research student, refer to this page.

The IEMP Entrance Examination is an entrance examination for admission to the English-taught “International Environmental Management Program (IEMP)”. This is an entrance examination for outstanding international students, and there are application requirements such as having won a scholarship.

It is conducted in the General Entrance Examination. Working adults can also apply for the IEMP Entrance Examination and other selections if they meet their requirements.

Please note that you should contact the faculty member of your interest before application for examination. If you are or have been a student at a foreign university, please contact AAO before contacting the faculty member.
Also, some faculty members and study areas may not be accepting students, so please check the application guidelines to know who are accepting students in the examination.

If you are or have been enrolled at a foreign university, please apply to the AAO.
Otherwise, find the contact information in the individual page of the faculty member in “Faculty Members and Departments” and then contact them by email.

Apply if you are or have been enrolled in a foreign university (not required if you graduated from a Japanese university only). Note that this is not required if you are already enrolled in the GSGES (e.g. research students).

In principle, reapplication is not allowed, but may be allowed depending on the reason the faculty member declined your contact. Please check with the AAO for details.

If you do not receive a reply for several weeks or if the application deadline of the examination is approaching while you are waiting, please contact the GSGES office.

It is not necessary to have won a scholarship at the time of application, but you must have won a scholarship at the time of enrollment. (Except in the case you are applying for the Asian Development Bank-Japan Scholarship Program (ADB-JSP) or the MEXT Special Scholarship Program, which are offered by the GSGES).

International students can apply for both of the examinations.

You can pursue your degree in English even if you do not enroll in the IEMP course,

Eligibility screening is not required if you meet the requirements on the examination guidelines.
If you are not sure whether you meet the following requirements of the Master’s course, contact AAO.
【Master’s course】
・A bachelor’s degree program at a university (minimum of 16 years total education) outside Japan
・A degree equivalent to a bachelor’s degree by completing studies with an enrollment term of at least three years (including the completion of such studies of relevant subjects in Japan via a correspondence course provided by a school in a foreign country, and the completion of studies at an educational facility accredited as having an approved curriculum under the educational system of said country, or those corresponding to such studies as designated by the Minister of MEXT) at a university or other school in a country outside Japan (only those universities or schools for which the overall conditions of education and research activities have been assessed by a party authorized by the government of said country or the organization concerned, or those corresponding to such entities as designated by the Minister of MEXT)

Taking examination Financial aids

For the General Entrance Examination, applicants from overseas do not need to travel to Japan, as the interview is administered online. IEMP Special Entrance Examination is administered online only.

Date and time cannot be changed unless there are special circumstances that make it unavoidable. Please note that even in the case of unavoidable special circumstances, we may not be able to accommodate a change.

That depends on the study area or the faculty members. We recommend that you contact them.

We do not disclose how we convert the English scores.

Enrollment Education

The GSGES office will apply for the “Certificate of Eligibility (CoE)” on behalf of the successful applicants (except for the recipients of Japanese Government Scholarship and JICA students) three months prior to enrollment. Kyoto University International Service Office (KUISO) will then contact you about the necessary procedures. For details, please refer to the information provided with “Notice of Success in the Entrance Examination”.
