Intern took part in ELSaN

It is now the hottest season in the Mzuzu region. Hello everyone.

It is comfortable in the shade, but the temperature rises to about 28°C during the day.

In October, a Kobe University graduate student, Akane Fujita, interned with our project and counterpart, Tiyeni, for about three weeks.

She mainly had a field trip in Tiyeni’s deep bed farming (so-called deep plowing method) training, training on making ridges and composting.

She also accompanied us, the ELSaN project, on a market survey and visited toilets that had already been constructed.

As this was her first time in Malawi, we hope she enjoyed the differences and similarities with other African countries.

Ms.Fujita gave us her impressions of her internship.

Hello! My name is Akane Fujita from the Graduate School of Kobe University.
I was given a precious opportunity to do an internship for about three weeks in October 2022 at the ELSaN Project of the Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies of Kyoto University and the Deep Bed Farming Project in Tiyeni.

I was told that farmers were struggling because they could not afford to buy fertilizers due to the sharp rise in the price of chemical fertilizers, and this project was exactly what farmers want.
Of course, the fact that the project contributes not only to agriculture but also to public health is also a wonderful point.

I also saw that the farmers keep the toilets that they built with their money clean and that they are painting the doors pretty, so I felt that they would cherish the toilets with the attachment that they made themselves.

I think it is wonderful that the project has great potential to remain here even after the project is finished, as it has a complementary positive impact on the local NGO’s project to improve yields, and that it is a new form of sustainability that would be used for the existing projects of the local organization.

I would like to thank Dr. Shinjo, Ms. Yadani, and all the project staff for the many discoveries and learnings I had the opportunity to accompany the project.

Thank you very much, Ms. Fujita.

The ELSaN project is open to such internship and field trip if desired. (However, all costs must be paid by the participants themselves.)
