The field study for Environmental Management Seminar B was conducted from May 26 to May 30, 2025. A total of 38 master’s students participated in the program, which was supported by 16 faculty members, 14 teaching assistants (TAs), and 2 external lecturers.
On the first day, students engaged in a forest study in the wooded area behind the Kyoto Seminar House, where they deepened their understanding of forest ecosystems through hands-on vegetation surveys. The second day was dedicated to regional fieldwork at the Ashiu Forest Research Station, Field Science Education and Research Center, Kyoto University, where students gained insights into local environmental and cultural contexts through field activities and an exchange event with community members. The third day featured a soil fieldwork conducted both in the forest area and at the cultivated fields of the Sakigake Center, focusing on the observation of soil structure and physical properties. On the fourth day, students returned to Kyoto University, where they participated in a morning practicum on soil fauna and delivered group presentations in the afternoon to share their findings and reflections from the fieldwork. On the final day, a river field study was conducted at the Kamogawa Delta, during which students learned techniques for measuring water quality and flow rate and evaluating the nutrient loadings.
The entire program was carried out safely and smoothly thanks to the generous cooperation of all those involved. Feedback from students indicated that the field-based experiences significantly enhanced their understanding of environmental issues, while also strengthening their sense of teamwork and peer connection. It is hoped that the knowledge and insights gained through this practicum will serve as a valuable foundation for future academic and research endeavors.
