The Kyoto University International Symposium on Education and Research in Global Environmental Studies in Asia is one of the activities that the GSGES has promoted for international collaboration in education and research since the GSGES’ establishment. The GSGES has been organizing it annually, providing an opportunity for researchers and students from partner universities in various countries to come together and participate in discussions.

Kyoto University International Symposium 2025

On December 2, the Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies (GSGES) held the Kyoto University International Symposium 2025 on Education and Research in Global Environmental Studies in Asia, themed “Improving Sustainable Food Systems and Livelihoods,” at IPB University in Bogor, Indonesia, with a hybrid format including Zoom participation. The primary objective was to discuss methodologies and perspectives for sustainable food systems and livelihood, focusing on the Asian region, and to promote the international development of education and research between Kyoto University and its partner universities. The symposium featured keynote speeches, poster sessions (including oral presentations), panel discussions, and international research project sessions. 353 participants, including researchers, students, and private sector representatives, attended from 91 organizations across 27 countries in Asia, Europe, Africa, and the United States.

The symposium commenced with opening remarks delivered by GSGES Dean Chihiro Tanaka, GSGES Professor Hirohide Kobayashi, and IPB University Vice Rector Ernan Rustiadi. Keynote speeches were given by GSGES Vice Dean Izuru Saizen, IPB University Vice Rector Ernan Rustiadi, and Eiji Nawata, Director of Kyoto University ASEAN Center. These were followed by a poster session showcasing 62 research presentations.

Afterwards, early-career researchers and students presented posters based on three topics: (1) Environmental Sciences and Ecosystems, (2) Technologies and Innovations for Sustainability, and (3) Socio-Economics, Policy, Education and Livelihoods. The presenters then took part in Q&A sessions that fostered vibrant and diverse discussions.

The afternoon session began with a panel discussion featuring representatives from Kyoto University, IPB University, Bandung Institute of Technology, the Royal University of Agriculture, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, the University of Danang, University of Science and Technology, Hue University of Agriculture and Forestry, and Hue University of Sciences. Next, regarding the international joint research projects newly launched from this fiscal year, an overview and eight project introductions were presented.

Finally, the Best Poster Award ceremony was held, followed by closing remarks delivered by Prof. Yasuyuki Kono, Vice President of Kyoto University, and Prof. Iskandar Z. Siregar, Vice President of IPB University. The symposium concluded with a welcome message and an invitation to next year’s symposium from Vice Dean Nguyen Thi Anh Tuyet of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, the host university for next year.

The symposium effectively served as a platform for strengthening interdisciplinary and international networks, improving educational curricula, and advancing international collaborative research. It also provided a valuable opportunity for early-career researchers to gain new perspectives through research presentations and networking, laying the groundwork for cooperation toward a sustainable future.
