Assist. Prof. Kato, Assoc. Prof. Takai and Prof. Katsumi in the field of Environmental Infrastructure Engineering has been awarded the JGS paper Awards in AY 2024. The Japanese Geotechnical Society Paper Award was established to recognize a single paper that has a significant contribution to the academic advancement of geotechnical engineering, disaster prevention, environmental geotechnics, and related fields. The recipient is selected through a review process conducted by the Society’s Awards Committee. The award ceremony was held on June 10, 2025.
■Name of Award: Evaluating solute transport between soil particles and pore water considering intra-particle diffusion
■Comments from the winner: This paper presents the validity of a new model—the DF-Kd model—which aims to predict solute transport in the ground and promote the utilization of slightly contaminated soil generated from the construction work. While our research team has mainly focused on experimental approaches, this study proposes a model that describes soil-chemical interactions. In addition, we established an experimental method to obtain model parameters and demonstrated its validity, allowing us to approach the research from a new perspective. The first author of the paper was a master’s course student at the time. It was impressive to see his enthusiasm and dedication to achieving the goal of publishing an academic paper. We will continue fostering collaboration between faculty members and students to achieve insightful research outcomes, as reflected in this award.
