Assist. Prof. Kato, Assoc. Prof. Takai and Prof. Katsumi in the field of Environmental Infrastructure Engineering has been awarded the JGS Kansai Branch Academic Awards in AY 2024.
The Kansai Branch Academic Award is presented to individuals, groups, or institutions that have achieved outstanding academic research results contributing to the advancement and dissemination of geotechnical engineering knowledge and technologies among branch members. The award also aims to invigorate activities within the Kansai Branch. The branch’s awards committee selected recipients, and the award ceremony was held on April 24, 2025.
■Name of Award: Evaluating leaching behavior of geogenic contaminants from clay-steel slag mixture under different curing time and mix proportion
■Comments from the winner: The study aimed to promote the utilization of steel slag, a by-product generated during the steelmaking process, as a ground improvement material. This achievement clarified both the improvement effects of stabilizing soft clay with steel slag and the leaching behavior of contaminants contained in the treated soil. New findings suggest that the amount of free calcium in the steel slag may have influenced both the immobilization of contaminants and the improvement of soil strength. Given that the utilization of industrial by-products is a critical social issue, and many aspects of the physicochemical properties of steel slag-treated soil remain unclear, we continue our research.
